Tax Credits

What are Tax Credits?

Tax Credits are a means of boosting household income. Nine out of ten families in the United Kingdom are entitled to tax credits. This includes people without children.

Tax Credits are divided in to two components:
Working Tax Credit (WTC)
and Child Tax Credit; from which there are thirteen individual qualifying components.

Shockingly, more than £4 billion will not be claimed by people who are otherwise entitled to tax credits this year alone.

There is also a 17% rise in the amount of money being left "on the table" compared to 2009/2010.

Who is eligible for Tax Credits?

You might be eligible to Working Tax Credit (WTC) if you are on a low wage for at least sixteen hours per week (although there are various qualifying conditions).

You might be eligible to Child Tax Credit if you are aged 16 or over, with at least one child and on a low income.

To help you identify with your situation, we have enclosed some illustrations / examples.

  • If you (or a member of your household) have a disability, this will be recognised in a Tax Credits claim.

  • If you have children, you may receive help towards your childcare.

  • For Working Tax Credit (WTC), you can also receive a higher allowance if you work for more than a certain number of hours.

  • People returning to work can (in some circumstances) receive additional payments.

Can I claim Tax Credits if I am already claiming other benefits?

Yes you can.

You can claim Tax Credits in addition to other benefits and allowances.

Whether you are a home-owner or a tenant you can still be eligible for Tax Credits as these are "need" based awards and can be added to other benefits already in payment.

To understand your full eligibility you need independent advice and or assessment. For this, you need a dedicated professional to assess your complete circumstances confidentially.

How much Tax Credits can I get?

Tax Credits combine to give you any number of qualifying components relevant to your circumstances.

Each of the components in Tax Credits has a monetary value. Those values range from £545 to £2,715 (yearly amounts).

Many customers receive both Working Tax Credit (WTC) and Child Tax Credit.

Case study

Jane's story – Part One

Jane is a lone parent with three children aged 2, 4 and 7. She receives the equivalent of £2449.20 (per annum) in Child Benefit

She works for 21 hours per week and her gross annual income is £6,000.

Jane gets Disability Living Allowance (DLA) (highest rate care component) for one of her children. This is worth £3712.80 per annum

Childcare costs are £270 a week (£14,040 a year).

Her combined annual income from all sources is £12,162.00

Jane's story – Part Two

Jane has told Housing Benefit Helpline about her financial circumstances. From this, we were able to work out qualifying elements for Tax Credits.

For Child Tax Credit, she is entitled to the following:

Family Element £545.00;
Child Element £6900.00 (for three children);
Disabled Child Element £2715.00; and
Severely Disabled Child Element £1,095.

For Working Tax Credit (WTC), she is entitled to the following:

Basic Element £1920.00;
Lone Parent Element £1,890.00;
Childcare Element (entitled to £216.00 per week) £11260.00

Total income from Tax Credits is £26325.00 per annum.

In "Part One", we saw that Jane’s annual income was only £12,162.

We are now able to boost this to a very healthy £38,487.00 per annum.

This case study is fictitious, but helps to illustrate just some of the many ways in which Housing Benefit Helpline can help change peoples lives for the better.

Why do Tax Credits go unclaimed?

Many people who could claim Tax Credits do not do so. Some of the reasons are as follows:

  • A lack of awareness about benefits to which you may be entitled and how to make a claim

  • Claim forms can be lengthy and complicated. This can lead to a form being completed incorrectly or, in the worst case, not at all

  • For those who are fortunate to be working, a cut in overtime, loss of bonus or a pay freeze could be causing you to "tighten your belt". People who have no experience of Tax Credits might not know how to start a claim

  • You may have read about problems with the Tax Credits system. In reality, the current system has been going for eight years and very few people now experience difficulties

  • We realise that time restraints can deter people from making their rightful claim for Tax Credits. All too often, work commitments, family and domestic duties can interfere.

What if my Tax Credits were refused or stopped altogether? What if I have been asked to pay something back?

Due to the inefficiencies of certain "officials" it has been known for refusals to be over-turned when the claim has been re-presented in a professional and methodical manner (i.e. by a professional company or consultant).

Many times, the refusal decision is based on an incorrect presentation of certain information by the claimant or by an incorrect assessment from the particular benefits office/r in question.

We have found 40% or more of "refused claims" have a very good chance of being overturned.

Needless to say, this issue is very important.

Full claim acceptance not only over-turns a previous refusal, but it also means you will probably be eligible for back-payments from the point of an initial claim.

This alone could often lead to thousands of pounds in back-payments due to you.
