Income Support

What is Income Support?

Income Support provides a top-up to help people on a low income who are under the age of 60. It is for people who do not have to sign on as unemployed. Whether you qualify or not and how much you get depends on your circumstances.

It is often paid to working age people who are sick or incapable of work, and whose income is below what the government states they need to live on

It is known as a "passported benefit" as it "passports" a claimant to many other benefits. For example, Income Support entitles the claimant to maximum Housing and Council Tax Benefits, free school meals and free prescriptions

Income Support can also help to meet the cost of mortgage interest payments

To date, it is estimated that over £7 billion in benefits goes unclaimed every year - a significant number of which should be claimed by Income Support applicants.

Who is eligible for Income Support?

If you, or someone you know, are experiencing financial difficulties, then it is important to acknowledge the problems and decide if there is eligibility to Income Support.

  • You may qualify for Income Support if you are working less than 16 hours each week (and whose partner works less than 24 hours) and on a low income

  • If you are in full-time study, there are circumstances in which you may still qualify for Income Support

  • You may qualify for Income Support if you are not eligible for Jobseekers Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance

  • You may qualify for Income Support if your savings are under £16,000

  • You may get Income Support if you are one of the following: a lone parent on parental or paternity leave, a carer, a refugee learning English who arrived less than a year ago

  • Young people in relevant education may also get Income Support. Generally this means full-time education up to GCE A-level or Scottish Certificate of Education (Higher level)

  • You can claim Income Support for yourself and your partner. If you live with a partner, there will be no addition to Income Support for children. You must claim Child Tax Credit instead

  • If you are a lone parent, you may qualify for Income Support. However, once your youngest child reaches a certain age, your entitlement to Income Support may stop

  • There are other people who might be entitled to Income Support such as: disabled workers, those taking parental or paternity leave as well as certain volunteers.

If you or someone that you know is on a low income, there could be eligibility for Income Support.

Can I claim Income Support if I am already claiming other benefits?

Yes you can!

If you are eligible for Income Support, you will ensure that you receive the minimum income required for a person in your circumstances.

Whether you are a home-owner or a tenant you will be eligible for Income Support as a "means-tested" benefit. Entitlement to Income Support ensures that other benefits and allowances are maximised.

Income Support is often a complementary benefit to other benefits.

To understand your full eligibility you need independent advice and or assessment. For this, you need a dedicated professional to assess your complete circumstances confidentially.

Case study

Dennis is 40 years old and lives on his own.

He recently gave up work to care for his elderly mother who receives Attendance Allowance, and as Dennis was caring for his mother for over 35 hours a week he has claimed Carer’s Allowance.

He receives £53.90 Carers Allowance per week.

Dennis has no other income and no savings so he is entitled to claim Income Support in addition to Carers Allowance.

He will receive £41.60 Income Support bringing his total weekly benefit income to £95.50.

This case study is fictitious, but helps to illustrate just some of the many ways in which Housing Benefit Helpline can help change peoples lives for the better.

Why does Income Support go unclaimed?

Many people who could claim Income Support often do not do so.

So why does not everyone claim Income Support?

Some of the reasons many people do not claim Income Support are as follows:

  • People do not realise that they might be entitled to claim

  • Claim forms can be lengthy and complicated. This can lead to a form being completed incorrectly or, in the worst case, not at all.

What if I have been refused Income Support?

Due to the inefficiencies of certain "officials" it has been known for refusals to be over-turned when the claim has been re-presented in a professional and methodical manner (i.e. by a professional company or consultant).

Many times, the refusal decision is based on an incorrect presentation of certain information by the claimant or by an incorrect assessment from the particular benefits office/r in question.

We have found 40% or more of "refused claims" have a very good chance of being overturned.

Needless to say, this issue is very important.

Full claim acceptance not only over-turns a previous refusal, but it also means you will probably be eligible for back-payments from the point of an initial claim.

This alone could often lead to thousands of pounds in back-payments due to you.
